Griselda Blanco

 

Griselda Blanco was born in Cartagena, Colombia and moved to Medellin when she was three years old. After a troubled childhood, she emigrated to Queens, NY with her second husband where they established a sizable cocaine distribution ring. In April 1975 Blanco was indicted on federal drug conspiracy charges, fled to Colombia, and then returned to Miami in the late 1970s.

Her distribution network, which was centered in Miami, brought in $80-million per month. Blanco was suspected of being the mastermind behind over two-hundred murders, mostly within the city of Miami. Blanco was arrested in 1985 and sentenced to over 10 years in prison. She was released and deported to Colombia in 2004, where she was later assassinated in 2012.

Crime stoppers is a community action program that gives citizens the opportunity to become involved in the fight against crime in Miami-Dade County and make our community a better place to live, work and go to school. Crime stoppers is comprised of the community members (tipsters), law enforcement and the media.

Callers are guaranteed anonymity, and are compensated with up to $1,000 if their tip results in an arrest and filing of criminal charges. As of April 30, 2013, tips received by Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers have resulted in 9,635 arrests and 33,828 cases being cleared. Callers have also received a total of over $1.7-million for their successful tips.
